Any advise for novice on how to feed wild birds?. x?

"Thrushes and dunnocks prefer to feed on the ground. For these birds, ter food on the lawn or use a ground feeding tray or hopper well clear of cover to avoid lurking cats. Remember to change the area you ter the food over every few days, and never put out more than is eaten the same day to avoid attracting vermin." A great deal more expert guidance can be found on the website of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Could a washing line be strung across the communal area with the agreement of others? If so, a small feeding table or fat could occasionally be suspended away from the hedge.
