What laws govern things like using a corporation's name to market your product? Trademark? Thanks!?

Do I search using "license" or "trademark infringement? My sister wants to use a name & I keep telling her it's illegal but can't be more specific. Thanks! What sort of penalties for something like using a professional ball team's name on products you sell? THANK YOU!
