Questions on circision?

Humans are capable of, and have experimented with, hundreds of forms of self-mutilation in the names of both adornment and ritual. Tattoos, piercings, neck extensions, lip extensions, crushed feet, etc... One has to wonder why a god would insist on one of these but then I've read a bit about this YHWH fellow, and he does seem a little odd.
